Live: Salman Khan sentenced to 5 years in jail; breaks down in court

Sessions court judge D W Deshpande said all charges against the actor have been proved, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving and driving under influence of liquor.

MUMBAI: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in jail in the 2002 hit-and-run case.
‘Culpable homicide not amounting to murder’, a charge that attracts a 10-year jail term, was levied against him, but he has got half of that sentence.
He has to now apply to the High Court for bail since the term is above three years.
Salman goes to jail right away, has to apply to the high court for bail: Salman Khan's judicial custody begins immediately. The court has ruled against further compensation to the victims of the 2002 accident. The court goes on vacation next week. Salman likely to be taken to Arthur Road jail.

Salman breaks down: ANI reports that shocked at the sentence, Salman sat down and broke into tears. Rediff.com meanwhile refutes this, saying Salman or his family members did not break down in the court.

His lawyers had said that Salman had already paid Rs 19 lakh in 2002 itself to the injured and that this was the first time compensation was given before the trial. He had asked the judge to consider this before delivering the quantum of sentence.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was today convicted by a Mumbai sessions court of culpabe homicide not amounting to murder in the 2002 hit and run case with all charges proved against him and can face upto 10 years in jail. The quantum of sentence is awaited. 
Judge DW Deshpande told Salman Khan, "You were the one behind the wheel. It is not possible that your driver was behind the wheel. You were drunk and under the influence of alcohol. All the charges against Salman Khan have been proved."

Salman Khan tells the judge, "I have suffered a trial as an ordinary citizen and therefore should be treated as that and not an actor."
The prosecution seeks maximum punishment (10 years for culpable homicide not amounting to murder). Defense pleads for a lesser sentence, cites Salman's humanitarian work and his brain ailment that could lead to worsening in jail.
