Even as the Delhi Government rejected the applications of app-based taxi operators for registration as radio cabs, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to hold an urgent hearing on a petition seeking measures for regulating radio taxis in the Capital, as they were allegedly flouting norms.
A Vacation Bench of Justice Mukta Gupta and Justice V.P. Vaish refused to accept a request for immediate hearing of the plea, saying the matter was under consideration of a Bench headed by Chief Justice G. Rohini. The Court said there was no urgency to take up the matter.
The petition was mentioned before the Bench by lawyer Shri Venkatesh, who sought directions for immediate ban on plying of Uber cabs, as they were not complying with the Delhi Government Transport Department’s instructions. When the lawyer referred to the reported incident of molestation of a female passenger by an Uber taxi driver during a ride to Gurgaon over the weekend, the Bench said there was no need for filing a separate writ petition for every incident that occurred in Delhi.
The High Court is already hearing a bunch of PILs seeking action against the taxi companies which are not following the Radio Taxi Scheme, 2006, laying down terms and conditions for licensing of taxi services. The Transport Department rejected the applications of Uber, Ola Cabs and Taxi4Sure for registration under the modified scheme, as they had failed to declare that they were complying with the conditions of a ban imposed on their services.
