Interestingly, it found that more and more people are coming forward for the sex change operation According to the city doctors, the trend is changing as people are becoming more aware about the procedure. "Earlier, people used to feel shy to talk about it but now there is no such taboo. We get around 25-30 cases every year related to sex change operations - a number which is on a surge. We have conducted several successful operations in Delhi," Dr Richie Gupta, senior consultant, head of department, plastic surgery, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh said.
While, cases of sex change of male to female are common worldwide, doctors in Delhi have witnessed the opposite trend.
The number of female to male surgeries are seen more than those from male to female.
"These are the cases with genetically different mind. The most common cases are the conversion of female to male. There is no negative impact in such cases. In a year, around 8 to10 people come to us seeking surgery," Dr Mahesh Mangal, senior consultant, plastic and cosmetic surgery, Sir Gangaram hospital told MAIL TODAY.
The cost of the surgery for male to female varies around 2 to 5 lakhs while female to male is between 4 to 8 lakhs.
"These people should be appreciated by their families. In most cases, society fails to accept them," said Mangal.
